Salus Terms of Use
Last updated: 26 July 2026 Salus is provided by: Teal Networks LLC, 725 Main Street Suite 100, Woodland CA, 95695 Contact: support@teal.net
1. What Salus is
Salus reads a barcode, looks the product up in a public database, and shows a 0–100 score computed from published U.S. dietary guidance, along with the reasoning behind it. Paid features add written explanations and personal daily targets.
2. What Salus is not
Salus does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Scores and explanations are informational. They are not a clinical assessment of you, your diet, or any product's effect on your health.
Specifically:
- Do not use Salus to make decisions about medication. Medicines are not scored, on
purpose.
- Personal daily targets are **published population references scaled to figures you
entered**, not requirements determined for you. A clinician's numbers supersede them.
- Pregnancy and allergy notes are informal prompts to read the package. They are not an
allergen test and can both miss things and over-flag them. **Always read the label's own allergen statement.** If you have a serious allergy, do not rely on this app.
- Nutrient goals are preferences you set. They are not a diagnosis of a deficiency.
Consult a qualified professional about your diet, and seek immediate medical attention for any medical emergency.
3. Where the data comes from, and its limits
Product information starts with Open Food Facts, a community-maintained public database licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). It is contributed by volunteers and:
- may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong;
- may not reflect a recent reformulation;
- may not match the package in your hand.
We also keep our own product record for each barcode, built on top of that: when a reviewer approves a submitted correction, or we fill in a missing field ourselves, our value is what the app shows for that field. The Open Food Facts data underneath is kept as it was, so a correction of ours does not erase the public record it replaced.
Our own fields carry the same limits. They are transcribed from packages by people, checked by another person, and neither step is infallible.
The package is authoritative, not Salus. Where they disagree, believe the package — and please submit a correction.
Scores are our own assessment, computed by a documented and consistently applied method, from that data. A score is an opinion derived from stated facts, not a claim about what a product will do to anyone.
4. AI explanations
Explanations are generated by a third-party model (xAI) from the product data and the factors Salus computed. They are:
- informational, and may be inaccurate. Language models can be confidently wrong.
- not medical advice.
- not reviewed by a human before you see them.
We constrain the model to use only the data supplied, to avoid stating figures that are not on the label, and to distinguish established evidence from popular-but-weakly- supported claims. Those constraints reduce errors. They do not eliminate them. Verify anything that matters, and please report anything wrong.
5. Contributions you submit
When you submit a correction you confirm you are transcribing information from a product package, and you grant us a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, modify, publish, and redistribute it — including contributing it back to Open Food Facts under the ODbL, which we may do.
Do not submit anything that is not product label information. Submissions are reviewed before publication, and we may reject or remove any of them.
Note what a correction is: a transcription of what is printed on a package. Facts about a product are not authored works, and nobody owns the sodium content of a cracker. The license above exists so we can publish and share your transcription without ambiguity, not to take something from you.
Open Food Facts and the ODbL
Our product records are built on Open Food Facts data, which is licensed under the **Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0**. We take that license seriously rather than quietly:
- Attribution. Every product record in Salus is derived from Open Food Facts and is
credited to it, here and in the app.
- Share-alike. The Open Food Facts data we hold, and our corrections and additions to it,
remain available under the ODbL. Anyone may ask us for the Open Food Facts–derived portion of our product database and we will supply it under that same license — write to support@teal.net.
- Contributing back. We intend to contribute approved corrections back to Open Food Facts,
so a fix made once in Salus improves the public database everyone draws on.
Salus's scoring — the 0–100 number, the ingredient verdicts, and the rubric behind them — is our own work and is not part of the database licensed above.
6. Reviewer role
Some accounts may be granted the ability to approve contributions. Reviewers must check submissions against the actual product and may not approve their own — the app and server both enforce that. Misuse ends the role.
7. Salus Pro
- Sold as an auto-renewing subscription through Apple's In-App Purchase. Prices and
periods are shown before you buy, in your local currency.
- Renews automatically until cancelled. Cancel any time in **Settings → Apple Account →
Subscriptions**; cancelling stops the next renewal and does not shorten the period you paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, not us. We cannot issue them.
- Free features — scanning, scores, ingredient ratings, allergen and pregnancy checks, and
better-choice suggestions — are free and we intend to keep them that way. Pro adds written explanations and personal targets.
- We may change what Pro includes. Reductions will not apply to a period you have already
paid for.
8. Acceptable use
Do not: reverse engineer or extract the service's credentials; automate scanning or requests at volume; submit false product data; resell or redistribute the data in breach of the ODbL; or use Salus to make claims about products in advertising.
9. Availability
Provided as-is, with no guarantee of uptime. Salus depends on third parties — Open Food Facts, xAI, Apple — and their outages are outside our control. Scanning and scoring work offline against products already on your device.
10. Disclaimers and liability
Salus is provided as-is and as-available, without warranties of any kind beyond those the law requires us to give. In particular we do not warrant that product data is accurate or complete, that a score is right for you, or that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Teal Networks LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or lost data, arising from your use of Salus. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of **the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or $50**.
Three things this section does not do, and cannot:
- It does not limit liability for our own fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, gross
negligence, or wilful misconduct.
- It does not limit liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
- It does not take away rights your local consumer-protection law gives you. Some
jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties or of certain damages; where that is so, the exclusions above apply only as far as that jurisdiction permits, and the rest of this section still stands.
Nothing here changes what Salus is. It is an information tool, not a clinician. The limits above are about money; they are not permission to rely on a score for a medical decision. See section 2.
11. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules, and by applicable United States federal law. If your local consumer law gives you the right to bring a claim in your own jurisdiction or under your own law, this does not remove it.
Any dispute that cannot be resolved between us goes to the state or federal courts located in Yolo County, California, and we each consent to that venue.
There is no arbitration clause and no class-action waiver in these terms. That is deliberate. You keep your right to a court, to a jury where one is available, and to participate in a class action. You may also bring a qualifying claim in small-claims court.
Talk to us first. Email support@teal.net and describe the problem. Most things are a mistake or a misunderstanding, and we would rather fix one than litigate it.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be posted here with a new date and, where required, surfaced in the app.
